Serigne Abdoulahi Mbacke – “Boroom Deurbi”

Serigne Abdoulahi MBACKE was best known as Boroom Deurbi. Born in 1907, He joined the prophet’s (PBUH) lineage through his mother Soxna Fatima KOUBRA grandchild of the revered Cheikh Sidya Baba, the renowned representative of the Khadrya in West Africa.
In his childhood, Serigne Abdoulahi showed great mastery of Quranic and religious sciences, which is typical attribute of all the descendants of the revered Serigne Touba, the distinguished soufi founder of Murid Tariqa. Just by looking at the teachers from whom Serigne Abdoulahi received his education, is sufficient to believe in its quality.

First, he learned the Quran from the saint Serigne Ndame Abdou Rahmane LO. There, he memorized the entire Quran and soon after, wrote his first copy of the holy book in Diourbel. This was followed by Fiqh studies from another renowned teacher, Mame Thierno Birahim, for three months. Thereafter, Serigne Habibou MBACKE and Serigne Moulaye BOUSSO perfected his mastery of grammar (Nahwu).
What comes to mind when Serigne Abdoulahi is mentioned, is his nickname, the “master of the gardens”.
This nickname symbolized him such that, people called him the “master of the gardens”. He had a keen sense of organisation, anticipation, entrepreneurship and most importantly deep love for human being.
To better gauge the greatness of his soul, we must contextualize that part of Senegal in the beginning of the twentieth century. During that time, Baol was plagued with aridity that rendered life difficult. Serigne Abdoulahi understood that very well and transformed Darou Rahman into an “Eldorado” with gardens dedicated to producing multitude of fruits and vegetables.
Beyond that love of human being, it is really his great piety that dictated his generous actions. It is known that faith in God and piety can be manifested in the love of HIS creatures as illustrated in the following verse: « wala qadd karamna bannî Âdama… » (WE have honoured the sons of Adam…)
Piety was one of his distinct qualities. By elevating the inherent values in work, Serigne Abdoulahi instilled in his talibees good work ethics and pious qualities that will weight heavily in the balance in judgement day. His piety was legendary. One of his habits noticed by his entourage was that he used to dress lightly during cold season and come out in the night to adore GOD. When returning from his adoration, he was filled with such a divine light that his chest was noticeably hot. During summer time, he used to get out mid day warmly dressed when the heat was more intense, to worship his Lord. In summary, his habit was to worship under difficult conditions. Serigne Abdoulahi used to sleep very little according to those close to him. At night, when everyone was in bed, he read the Quran, meditated and prayed.
